Base & planning

Base and planning guide

Everything you need to plan the base, access and delivery for your Eco oven: base sizes for every model, straight and corner base plans, and a checklist before you build.

Base sizes

Base sizes for every oven

The oven footprint is the space the oven itself takes up, so your base must be at least this size. Our Mezzano plans use a straight base 1000 mm high, and a corner base is also available.

What a good base needs

Getting the base right

A wood-fired oven is heavy masonry. A well-built base keeps it level, safe and easy to use for years.

Strong enough for the load

Build on a sound foundation with a structure strong enough to carry a heavy masonry oven. If in doubt, ask a builder or engineer to check it.

Level top

The top of the base must be flat and level so the oven sits evenly and the cooking floor stays true.

Non-combustible

Use non-combustible materials for the base and top. Keep timber, furniture and plants well away from the oven.

Comfortable working height

Our Mezzano base plans use a 1000 mm high base, which puts the oven floor at a comfortable height for most cooks.

Flue clearance

Leave clear space above and around the flue, and think about wind direction and neighbours when you choose the position.

Under cover?

If the oven will be under a patio or other roof, speak to us about flue extensions and check your local building requirements.

Before you build

Pre-build checklist

Work through this list before you start building your base. If anything is uncertain, contact us first.

Access and delivery

Plan the route to the oven

Most residential ovens arrive fully assembled on a pallet. Plan how the oven will get from the delivery vehicle to its base.

Measure the narrowest point

Measure the narrowest gate, doorway or passage on the route to the oven position.

Note steps and slopes

Note any steps, slopes or soft ground between the offloading point and the base.

Use the right equipment

Use suitable lifting equipment or professional handling. If carrying by hand, you need at least 4 people for the Piccola 60, Piccola 70 and Mezzano 70, and at least 6 people for the Mezzano 90.

Tight access?

If an assembled oven cannot reach the base, ask us about a kit. In Cape Town, we can assemble it on site.

Not sure about your base?

Send us a photo of your space with rough measurements, and tell us which oven you are considering. We will help you plan the base before you build.
